A Christian is a follower of Christ
The word “Christian” was first mentioned by a pagan in Acts 26:28, and later on by Apostle Peter in 1 Peter 4:16.
And Romans 10:9 shows us how to become a Christian; we are told in the latter part of that verse that to receive Christ, we are to confess (acknowledge) that He is the Lord. Your spirit yields to Jesus’ Lordship when you make that confession. And He comes in the personality of the Holy Spirit to live in you. He dwelling in you makes you a Christian.
The Living Word of God (John 1:1) impregnates your spirit to make you the Lord Jesus Christ expressing himself through you; the entrance of God’s word makes you the expression of Christ (Psalm 119:19). The word in you by the baptism of the Holy Spirit makes you Christ Like. The Holy Spirit is inside you. He is the very nature and presence of the Father. And you carry Him around every day.
God’s good news is in you. It is like pregnancy; you cannot hide it. Matthew 4:34 says it this way, “out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.” And Jesus, in John 7:38 said, “He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.” Meaning, whatever you are full of is what comes out of you. And that brings to mind what Christianity is; Christianity is the outward expression of God in your spirit. It is not a code of rules and regulations, religion is; and that is bondage. Christians are not in bondage, they are in a relationship with God.
Now, if you have received Jesus Christ by confessing He is the Lord when you believed in Him (Romans 10:9), then the result is you are Him on the inside. And you do whatever He does.
In conclusion, Christ dwells in anyone that follows Him.
Also note that…
A Christian is not the Called
One can refuse to yield to his calling. Yes, many run away from their calling every day. There are some people, for example, who were called, even before they were born, to be great servants of God, but left this planet, earth, without fulfilling that purpose in their life time. Matthew 22:14 says it this way, “For many are called, but few are chosen” Meaning…
A Christian is the Chosen One
That is not to say our Lord Jesus Christ is a Christian. No! You are the Chosen one here.
God called all men to receive His gift of salvation by making His only begotten Son to come and die for the world (John 3:16). And that is an indication that He has called everyone, not only Christians. But looking at it, you will realize that few people answer to His call by receiving Jesus Christ as their Lord and personal Savior. These few are the chosen ones; the Christians.
A Christian is the Righteous Man
Let us dive deeper:
Whatever God does is right. He is the standard for deciding rightness. He cannot improve on His perfection because He is perfect. Men like Job, Moses, Elijah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, David, and the others are nowhere near His level of perfection. To be perfect, receive His righteousness.
Righteousness is one of the most misunderstood subjects in the bible. Your faith can never grow beyond your understanding of it. You cannot also work – ask or pray – for it. It is the gift of God. Today, Christians have the ability to stand in His presence without a sense of guilt. And that is righteousness – your right standing with the Lord. The truth is it is possible for any man.
How to Be a Righteous Man
We would not need the Lord Jesus if our good works and right conducts could make us righteous. Stop self-righteousness and believe with your heart unto His in Christ. James 2:23 says it this way: “Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the friend of God.” It is that simple. Abraham believed and it was credited to him as he having a right standing with the Father. Only believe. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation (Romans 10:10).
2 Corinthians 5:21 says God hath made Jesus to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him. Meaning man is made righteous in Jesus when he receives Him. Read Romans 10:9 to learn how to receive the Lord if you are not a Christian. You are a new creature if you be in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17).
Also understand that no Christian grows in righteousness; you cannot. And you will never be more righteous than you are right now. You are as perfect as Jesus is. God is the standard for deciding rightness. And man is made righteous in the Lord when he receives the Lord Jesus Christ (2 Corinthians 5:21). Hallelujah!
